A brief display of Northern Lights is visible at middle latitudes when Earth's magnetic field turns south during a solar strom. This was a completely unexpected display and only lasted for about 15 minutes before disappearing completely.

Was this the night of that recent solar storm? I can't remember the exact date it happened, but I bet it made for quite a show.
Absolutely stunning!

I really like this but I think I'd like it more if you had just framed the sky.

Yeah... it was tough to figure out what to do. One of these days I need a display that lasts longer so I can drive to better foreground.

Cool! I assume this was from that recent solar flare...I remember intending to go out at night but I totally forgot  Oh well, it probably wouldn't have happened where I live anyway, and it seems this needed a long exposure to capture it brightly too (unless your town uses amazingly high-wattage streetlights :giggle:)

I agree with others about the colour. It seems the majority of aurora pics I see are green, followed by red and blue as the next most common colours. But pinks, oranges, yellows, purples and that wicked lime green colour seem to be pretty rare :omg:

This was actually back at the beginning of February. I did get a timelapse of the aurora from the recent X flare that I posted in my journal but it wasnt as impressive as this brief event. I live out in the country so luckily I dont have a whole lot of light pollution to deal with but... this far south they are usually fairly weak so I do have to use long exposures. So far I've seen green, red, and purple/pink. I think this one looks so lime green because of the white balance I used and the fact that its slightly over exposed.
