The Aurora, Nebraska supercell continues to churn eastward down Interstate 80 as the light lowers dramatically after sunset. We stopped near York, Nebraska and were far enough east to watch the supercell structure rotate over the landscape as lightning strikes lashed out of the storm above. Nearly all of these happened at the same time, and I freaked out waiting for my exposure to finish to make sure these were in the frame. Shortly after this the storm was close enough that we lost our good view of the structure, and we continued east as the storm shriveled away.

What can I say, severe weather can be scary, it can be ruthless, it can be dark, but it can also be beautiful, and this amazing photo is no exception to those magnificent traits. It may seem crazy and impossible to take a shot like this on paper, but in the real world the photographer made it happen and without flaws.

Just by the darkness, colors and lightning involved you know there's an ominous but amazing mass of energy that's being released into the sky, it's ass if the gods of Mount Olympus are in a clash. One of the most epic photographs of severe weather I've come across.

It looks like you really spiced this one up, personally I'm not a fan of "spicing up" photos. I'll be honest, the blue on the left doesn't look real and neither do the sun rays on the right. That being said I actually really like the blue and the lightning in the middle does look real.

What time of day was this photo shot, also is it HDR?

This is a single raw image... and it was taken per the EXIF on the right at 9:48pm which seems about right. June provides our longest days here on the plains. The sun usually goes down somewhere around 9:15 so this would be getting close to darkness. The blue you see is whats left of twilight. I did very minimal editing to this besides a curves adjustment and sharpening.

Cool Photos. What are those two little green dots?

The green dots are a small lense flare from a farm light that is just right out of the frame.
